DOE Invests $20 Million to Optimize Lifecycle of Solar Energy Systems and Minimize Technology Waste

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the availability of $20 million through the Materials, Operation, and Recycling of Photovoltaics (MORE PV) funding opportunity. The program supports projects that will accelerate domestic production of photovoltaic (PV) systems by minimizing the use of solar energy system materials, improving installation quality and resilience of PV systems, and streamlining the reuse and recyclability of solar panels. This funding opportunity will also set up a Solar Partnership to Advance Recycling and Circularity to improve materials recovery and develop safe end-of-life practices for PV system components. Teams from institutions of higher education, for-profit entities, non-profit entities, state and local government, and tribal entities are encouraged to apply. 

 

DHS Announces Funding Allocations for Fiscal Year 2023 Preparedness Grants

Today, the Department of Homeland Security announced final allocations of $605 million in six Fiscal Year 2023 competitive preparedness grant programs. The grant programs provide funding to state, local, tribal, and territorial governments, nonprofit agencies, and the private sector to build and sustain capabilities to prevent, protect against, respond to and recover from acts of terrorism and other disasters. Programs with allocations announced include Operation Stonegarden, Tribal Homeland Security Grant Program, Nonprofit Security Grant Program, Port Security Grant Program, Transit Security Grant Program and Intercity Bus Security Grant Program.

 

DOE Announces Nearly $30 Million in Grid Resilience Grants for States and Tribal Nations to Modernize Electric Grid

On Thursday, the Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office awarded $29.9 million through Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grants. Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the fourth round of formula funding was provided to three states, three tribal nations, and an Alaskan Native Corporation to modernize the electric grid, reduce impacts of climate-driven extreme weather and natural disasters, and ensure power sector reliability. In total, DOE has distributed almost $354 million in Grid Resilience Formula Grants to 23 states, the District of Columbia, and 12 tribal entities.

 

DOT $20 Million in Grants to Help Communities Prosper with Improved Access to Transit

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded $20 million to 47 communities to help improve public transportation options in areas experiencing long-term economic distress. FTA's Areas of Persistent Poverty (AoPP) program provides support to state and local governments, transit agencies, and nonprofit organizations to create better transit for residents with limited or no transportation options. Awarded projects will initiate and/or modernize transit services and provide benefits to communities with environmental justice concerns.

 

NTIA Announces Nearly $4 Million in Internet for All Grants to Tribal Lands

On Thursday, the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) awarded $3,998,000 to eight Tribes as part of the Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program (TBCP). The funding will help Tribes reduce monthly Internet service costs, plan for future Internet infrastructure investments, upgrade network equipment, and purchase devices. Including this round of grantees, investments from the program have provided 191 Tribal entities more than $1.78 billion in total.  

 

DOT Announces $21 Million in Grants to Improve Road Safety on Tribal Lands

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $20.9 million for 88 Tribal projects through the Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund. The funding supports projects that will reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries on Tribal lands by implementing proven countermeasures such as pavement markings, rumble strips and better pedestrian infrastructure.
